When I lived in the DC area I got a lot of wonderful stuff by joining a freecycle group (play on the word “recycle”) - there will be “buy nothing” groups, too.
You’re quite right, I’m in both Freecycle and our local Buy Nothing. Most of the furniture we have got so far is thanks to those groups! And when we go home again it will all go back to someone via the same groups!
You should have taken a 'before' photo too. ;)

Our tables could be friends! Good, practical reminder to think about where we are laying the feast.
Oh and switching from letter sized paper to A4 and back again is extremely annoying! None of my binders and papers now work together.
You would have thought our two great nations could have just come to an agreement on this one!
