And here’s how we homeschooled today! If you’re new here, my children are 5 and 7.
The children read independently for ages while I woke up slowly and went to the shops because we had run out of everything, again.
As it was a beautiful morning we seized the day and went to a nearby park. On the way we passed a nature reserve which is always closed but this morning was open, so we stepped inside. We were rewarded with Speckled Wood butterflies fighting (we later learned they are very territorial, and learnt that ‘terra’ in Latin means earth), and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. We used the Merlin bird app again to identify birds from their songs.
We also practised times tables and doubles/halves/quarters as we walked.
Spent ages playing in the park in the sunshine.
After lunch back at home we looked up the Speckled Wood butterfly in our Butterflies and Moths book and compared the picture to the one I took in the nature reserve.
My daughter had brought home a mallow flower and you could easily see the carpels as well as the stamens, so we talked about parts of a flower and I drew a labelled diagram on the blackboard.
Both children worked in their Usborne Addition and Subtraction books while I sat squeezed between them on the sofa and attempted to help two children with different maths problems at the same time.
They played in the garden with a friend.
At tea time we talked about habitats. Speckled Woods like, unsurprisingly, woodlands, and the children are very into the Lion King at the moment so we talked about savannah and the difference between the two habitats. We also talked about habitat destruction and I read a couple of short extracts from Isabella Tree’s book Wilding.
At bedtime they each chose to read aloud to me and then carried on independently in bed until lights out. (Usborne’s The Story of Pirates and The Clumsy Crocodile)
