Before we get started, two announcements:
If you share my son’s interest in Afghanistan, I recommend reader Ben Yeoh’s radio play which dramatises Rory Stewart’s walk across Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban in 2002. I listened to it last night and it’s great. It was a BBC Radio 4 Afternoon Play, and the Guardian called it ‘superb’. I agree!
The link is unlisted but Ben has kindly said I can share it with anyone who’s interested—get in touch by e-mail or in the comments. (And if, like me, your first thought about cultural content is ‘How long is it?’, I’m pleased to say it’s an easily achievable 40 minutes.) Thank you, Ben!
Tomorrow we have another special guest edition, this time from New Zealand. If you’re not a subscriber sign up now to make sure you don’t miss it. And if you’d like to share your own day I’d love to hear from you—all forms of home ed welcome.
Today we used a to-do list again for each child (see yesterday’s post if you missed it.) It was very effective and this is what we got done before lunch:
Independent reading (The Count of Monte Cristo and The Snow Queen, both re-reads)
Jolly Phonics books
Two experiments from the latest Curiosity Box, about reactions
My son read Magic Tree House: Olympic Challenge, played with his toy cars, and read an old Pokemon magazine.
My daughter did some Khan Academy work on measurement.
My son read several pages of the History Encyclopedia and then asked me to copy out a paragraph about the American War of Independence for his history folder. I helped him find the right place to put it.
After lunch I read aloud another chapter of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. (My daughter could happily listen to this straight through in one sitting, but my son is less bothered.) Then we went outside for some fresh air, playing catch, skateboarding, and attempting to ride the bike. When we came in I was very surprised (and, I’ll admit, somewhat crushed) to find it was only 3.15.
They spent the rest of the day playing together, with more Narnia at tea, followed by running around the garden with friends when I had planned for them to be having a bath.
Thank you for reading. If you’re not already subscribed, sign up now and never miss a post. It’s free!
I'm interested in the radio play! I loved The Places in Between when it came out.
What are your kids ages?
