Charlotte Mason would have been proud today. At home this morning the children each did a page of their Jolly Phonics books, a little Multiplication by Heart, and revised their Greek and French. Then we went out to spend the day at a playground with some other homeschooling families, and were out for hours. The children dug holes in the sand, ran around chasing each other, and generally did exactly what children should do. The grown-ups sat around and chatted, and wondered if we ought to be worried about sunburn in late September. Inspired by Ruth Gaskovski’s recent guest post for me about the importance of community in homeschooling, we have resolved to have a regular weekly meet-up. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll all be dissecting sheep hearts and learning Latin stems together like Ruth.
On the way home the children asked to check out a secondhand bookshop, and we bought See Inside Ancient Egypt for £1.99—who can resist a secondhand book bargain? I also bought some chocolate to speed us home, and we did a little maths to work out how to share it equally between us. On the train to and from the playground they had also both been busy reading Henry and Beezus and Huckleberry Finn (a simplified reading version).
Now they’re out running around the garden when they ought to be getting into pyjamas. As Charlotte Mason wisely said:
Never be within doors when you can rightly be without.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, with plenty of sunshine and fresh air. See you on Monday!
