If you’ve been here a while you might remember that back in November we went on a Big Day Out to Canterbury. It was so good that yesterday we went back, and spent another 3-4 hours in the cathedral, and visited the Roman Museum.
I love the book so far. I first read A Lost Lady and O Pioneers and I think this is even better. I don’t know how well-known she is over here - I don’t think my finger is sufficiently on the pulse to know! I do know that Wendell Berry is extremely hard to get hold of here, which is annoying because I really want to read Jayber Crow!
Wow! Cathedral! I’d never heard of it and it looks so good! My six year old adores games like this and will play the adult version of Risk for days at a time, so I reckon he could manage it too. I’ll look out for a cheap secondhand one on ebay. Thank you for the suggestion!
I thought it was great. Haven’t seen the movie but in the book she doesn’t come across as a wholly sympathetic character. But then you’ve got to have some edge to want to trek across the desert and actually make it happen! It was fascinating on the topic of relationships - men and women, white and black, human and animal, humans and the planet. I really enjoyed it.
She's not wholly sympathetic in the movie, either. I can't remember quite what stuck me so hard but I remember crying and crying, and I've wanted to read the book ever since.
She also has a new one out, last fall -- I borrowed it from the library a few weeks ago -- Unfinished Woman. I'm not going to get to it before I have to return it...
I hope you like them! There are so many good ones we’re a bit paralysed by indecision over which to read first! There are some brilliant children’s books around at the moment.
Too many! My daughter and I are surrounded by an embarrassment of riches, and both want to gobble up every book. We could do nothing but read wonderful children’s books, all day. :)
Oh, My Antonia! Cather is one of my very favorite authors. I hope you love the book. Is Cather well-known in the UK?
Your post put me in mind of the Cathedral game (https://www.amazon.com/Cathedral-Strategy-Tabletop-Board-Classic/dp/B00000IZXG). We had a homemade version when I was a kid, and we really loved it. I wonder if your older child might be ready for it?

Yes, I bet he could play it! I hope you are able to find a copy. The Amazon price is really steep, ick!
I love Cather's short stories, too.
What did you think of Tracks? I watched the movie years ago (without realizing it was a book) and was profoundly moved by it.

Yes that’s on my list too!
Lovely list of books. I’ve requested several just now! Thank you.

My daughter is loving this one: What It’s Like To Be A Bird (the young reader version of the wonderful adult book of the same name).

This looks wonderful! Going to look it up now…
This looks so good -- thank you for sharing!

What a gorgeous day!
