Have you got the Little House Cookbook? I have not managed to actually cook anything from it, but I love the detailed explanations of how all the food would have been prepared. Also Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser is a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder that I really enjoyed a couple of years ago.
As a retired English teacher, I found grammaramnesia to be a very real thing. Maybe a quick walk around the room to point to things and say their names (in a funny voice, of course) might clear the fog.
