Just grabbed the Murerous Maths - suddenly taken over GCSE Maths tutoring and needing to think outside the box for concepts which weren't permeating so hoping this will help. Thank you
Great recommendations (as always) thanks Catherine. We have been amassing the peep inside, look inside, see inside books slowly in our house over the years too. Have just popped Obsessive about Octopuses on hold at the library to try out this series we haven't read before.
So glad you found it useful. We were reading Curious about Crocodiles this morning. I learnt that although the muscles which keep their jaws closed are incredibly strong, the muscles that open the jaws are pretty weak, which is why their mouths can be held shut with strong tape!
I'm just rereading for January inspo. This is a great post thankyou.
It made me want to say out loud what I have been thinking, and, wonder if anyone else has noticed the same. We have been using Oxford Reading Tree books to learn to read, after starting at school on Read Write Inc. Maybe many of you haven't used this 'school like' approach?
But I was continuing the journey he started with one term in Reception class.
What I have noticed with my six year old grandson is, he is devouring these books in a way we readers do. But all the children I have known to learn to read at school with the same schemes have used the books as box tickers; books to get through to get on to the next level of learning to read not as part of the process of enjoying reading.
I am very much looking forward to spending some cold miserable Winter afternoons ahead reading and sharing many of these recommended books. So once again thankyou for your excellent and inspiring posts Catherine.

Would love to know what you think of it when you’ve given it a go.

I hope you’re feeling better soon! We’ve loved ‘See Inside’ and ‘Who Was…?’ books, too.
Hope you have all enjoyed the Christmas season.
