I love your creativity and willingness to collaborate with your son! Like you, I've also found that giving my daughter some control over when she completes her assignments helps give her a sense of agency. I was homeschooled myself and remember having total control over when I did my work in the later grades. It really motivated me to do a good job so that I could keep my parents off my back hahahaha. Thanks so much for sharing your about your wonderful homeschool!
We were rather less organized in our homeschooling, being admirers of A.S. Neill. But, it turned out ok as both our kids are college graduates. (You better believe it took a lot of work on our part!)
Love your honesty here, Latham. You remind me of Daniel Pink’s book Drive, where he argues that we are most motivated by autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Curious how you’re tracking mastery (if you are) and how you articulate purpose with your son?
Wow! Thanks so much for sharing this! As a fellow parent of a young man on the spectrum, this is especially inspiring!
Love this story.
Thank you Mike
